Aftercare for Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment is important to ensure proper healing and to maximise results while reducing the risk of side effects such as irritation, hyperpigmentation, or infection. Here's a helpful guide:
Immediately After Treatment (First 24–48 Hours)
- Cool compresses: Use cold packs or a damp, cool cloth to soothe redness or heat in the treated area.
- Avoid heat: No hot showers, saunas, or strenuous exercise for 24–48 hours.
- Avoid direct sun exposure.
- Gentle skincare: Cleanse with a mild, non-abrasive cleanser. Pat dry—don’t rub.
- Avoid scrubs, exfoliants, or retinoids.
Sun Protection (Critical Step)
- Use a broad-spectrum SPF50+ sunscreen daily.
- Reapply every 2–3 hours if outdoors.
- Wear a wide-brimmed hat and stay in the shade where possible.
- Avoid tanning beds completely.
Skin Changes & What to Expect
- Redness and warmth are common and usually resolve in a day or two.
- Dark spots may darken temporarily and then flake off within 7–10 days—this is normal.
- Avoid picking or scratching treated areas.
Moisturising
- Use a fragrance-free, hydrating moisturiser 1–2 times daily.
- Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or aloe vera.
Avoid for 5–7 Days
- Makeup on the treated area (especially if blistering or peeling).
- Harsh products: acids (AHAs/BHAs), retinol, benzoyl peroxide.
